Contact Epic 19th April 2015 - 125km MTB event

The contact epic was a perfect day of calm and clear conditions after a night of heavy rain prior to the race. I have only competed in the Epic once last year and it was an alternative course of out and back on just one side of the lake as opposed to the 'proper' course of the loop around the whole lake.

My goal for this ride was to manage my energy input carefully knowing that I was carrying a bit of fatigue from the previous weekends race in the Naseby 12 hour. So setting off for the day I ensured a good supply of nutrition was in my bag and at hand to put into the body at regular intervals. The other goal was to not really stop and become complacent with tiredness. In the end I have three stops - 1- to help a rider in the shorter classic event that started ahead of us that had a chain jam all munched up which needed a hand to un-jam from between her cassette and spokes - good help and all part of the "see you out there" spirit, 2. for a stop to refuel the drink bladder and one later on to empty the bladder! I managed to break a spoke on my rear wheel with a herd hit into a rock on a zippy little descent with about 40km to go so had my fingers crossed in a hope that it would make it to the end with out 'tacoing' itself which it didn't. The wheel is now in with Willem and his workshop team at Racers Edge getting fixed up for it's future hammerings!! All up the ride was fantastic and I came in with a time of 7hr20min which I was happy with.

Naseby 12 hour MTB Solo 2015

A real ‪#‎seeyououtthere‬ ‪#‎torpedo7‬ day yesterday! The Naseby 12 Hour Solo MTB event certainly took all the energy out of my system over the course of the day. 13 laps completed in just over 11 hours and feeling pretty smashed, not quite enough time for a 14th. It was great to have the support of theTorpedo7 crew in the pits area throughout the day and the quality bike and gear making things that bit more comforatble on the bike. This pic is from prior to the start, I am feeling a little old and weathered today!

Motatapu Xterra Tri March 2015

Body was feeling pretty trashed  after 6hours26min of swimming MTBing and running. A great race in the Motatapu XTerra Triathlon today. Some pretty wet, muddy and tough conditions - the tougher the conditions the more satisfying at the end. The bike and all the other gear were put through some great product testing today with a big thumbs up to the team at ‪#‎torpedo7‬‪#‎Seeyououtthere‬ Torpedo7  The 2015 Motatapu X terra tri which was a bit of a wet and mucky course due to the rainfall overnight and on the morning of the event. I had a good swim coming out of the water in the time I would expect and onto the MTB which was a pretty slow slog through, my MTB time was about an hour slower than previous races due to the sticky ground conditions (and one small stop to play good T7 guy to a bloke in distress with a jammed chain) but got through feeling fine and onto the run which was great as I have been doing quite a lot of hill work around the hills of Hawea so the legs are feeling strong and the run went well until we were stopped 2 km from the end due to the river levels rising so our times were taken from there clocking me in at 6hr26min and placing me 3rd in my age cat and half way through the overall field so pretty happy with this.

Thursday

Challenge Wanaka - The Lake Wanaka Half

Well it dawned as a perfect day for the annual Challenge Wanaka and Lake Wanaka Half. I competed in the Lake Wanaka Half this yerar which consisted of the 1.9km Swim, 90km Cycle and a 21km run.
This was the fourth time I have races this event (as well as one crack at the full in 2012)...
More detail of the event and my story of it will be here soon....

Summer Missions and Sunshine!

The last month has been that of a crazy one with some big changes going on for our family. I have just scored myself a permanent job teaching at Mt Aspiring College in Wanaka. We have been flat out getting our house for sale, buying a house and getting ready for the big move in a couple of weeks. All amongst this I have been fitting in what training I can in preparation for a few up

coming races (after missing a few in the last month due to family business with all that has been going along with family time with our three little ones. I have however managed to get in at least a blast on the bike or a good tempo run most days to keep the body ticking along. Along with these i have had some good rides towing the tag along bike wiht my sons who take turns at coming for missions on this. Even managed some good single track with one of the little fellas hanging on tight! The next event in preparation for is the Lake Wanaka Half Ironman followed by the Motatapu Xterra Tri.
Another update or adventure posted soon.

Dunedin Mazda Adventure Challenge - 12 Hour Multi-Cross! 1st November 2014

First day out in the new branded Torpedo 7 Kit and it was given a good thrashing of sweat, salt water and sunshine and stood up fantastically! A great day ( but long!!) competing solo in the 12 hour individual section of this new event. Made up of a Kayak loop, MTB loop and a Run loop. Each lap was set to take around 30-40minutes and you could choose what you did and in what order. Each time you completed 3 different disciplines you earned a bonus point. It was a hot NW wind blowing and the wind really picked making for a bit of a rough ride on the water when the high tide started to turn as part of the paddle was down the river mouth channel so some good bumpy unpredictable currents made me work hard to have the trusty UFO Kayak slicing through the water well!.
I repeated Kayak, MTB, Run loops in tis order throughout the day apart from a shuffle of order in the last set and managed 15 laps in total picking up 5 bonus points along the way giving me placing of 10th in the solo 12 hour competitors. The winner completed his first lap as a run and then biked all day following this.
A good solid day out with 11hrs 35min of racing and 3 food stops in amongst this. Needless to say Sunday was a day of rest and lots of eating and re-fuelling!! The body is well accustomed to 12 hours of continuous exercise but it takes it's toll on energy the following day!

Monday

Huriawa Peninsula

A great weekend of training and 'hooning' around the Huriawa Peninsula on foot and a few laps on the bike on the MTB trails as well at Karitane in prep for next weekends 12 hour multicross race which I will be competing in as an individual. Needless to say the body will be pushed to it's limits throughout the day!

Karitane Multisport Race - 19th October

Had a great little local race today in Karitane put on by the Dunedin Tri Club, 5km Kayak, 25km MTB and 5km run, pushing hard at high intensity most the way in a small but solid group of athletes to come away with a 3rd

Sunday

Moro Marathon Sep 2014....

Race pack for what would have been Marathon #11 didn't even get opened (apart form taking the Moro bar out of it to eat). Ill's chills and bugs still in my system combined with no sleep in our house with sick little people meant it was family first and getting our little Oscar and his skin sorted.. - there will be plenty more opportunity to thrash the body through the summer months ahead!

Lake Hawea Contact Epic MTB April 26th 2014 Report

A bit of a run down on how the day went below this video and amongst the pics...

Pre Race 6.30am fresh legs and ready to roll!
The Lake Hawea Epic is a race I had never done before. It had great appeal to me as the surrounds of Lake Hawea are simply stunning, but at the same time is a piece of country that can throw up any weather conditions on any given day. The event is a 125km loop around the lake. When I arrived to register I was informed of the rain that they had on the Thursday prior to the race and this had seen the Hunter River at the head of the lake flowing way to high to cross safely on our loop around the lake - so there was an alternative course in place which was to head up the Northern side of the lake to pretty much the Hunter River and return which was to be a slightly shorter course. With a couple of shorter course options called the classic and traverse there were around 700 riders in this event. On the start line for a 7am start there were 400 riders in the Epic, our first few Km were on a couple of sealed roads before making our way up the lake side. Almost every event that involves a mass start and bunch riding there is always someone (or more than1) person taken down in the bunch with a crash, This years Epic was no exception, about 2km into it I heard the sound of body and bike scrubbing across the ground to then see 3 riders nailed into the ground amongst the bunch - unfortunately their day was over already.
photo www.Studio5.co.nz
I managed to stay safe and settled into what was to be a bit of a slow pace for the day, having still been battling with a lower back strain and relying on prescribed Muscle Relaxant drugs to and extensive physio to settle spinal muscle spasms (of which I had to stop taking prior to this event as they do give you a bit of a 'spaced out relaxed feel') Anyway the day was a stunned with clear skies and spectacular views, one of which was a perfect glimpse of Mt Aspiring across the lake and behind the ranges in front of us. It was a long slog out to the turn around with lots of rocky patches amongst many little pinches of up and down. The turn around point provided a good opportunity to fuel up and before making my way back.
On the return I came across a man who was worried his day was over as he had a broken rear derailleur and didn't have any ideas what to do to fix it. Myself being a little bit of a problem solver I managed to get him rolling again with a limited selection of gears but he was fine with that and very appreciative, so my good deed for the day.

Around the 90km mark at the Dingle Burn Station there was a welcomed aid station serving Scones wiht Jam and Cream along with Coffee - I made my donation to them and loaded up on scones and a mege coffee which had me rolling along happily again after this - I had perhaps been a little under fed during the race and was suffering a bit by now as a result. anyway a last slog of hills and it was into Lake Hawea to the finish. It was a tough 7hrs24min in the saddle for me but satisfying knowing that my back had held together and didn't give too much trouble and that my body had bounced back form the Naseby 12 hour 3 weeks earlier. All up a great day with some stunning scenery.! Bike rolling smooth and faultless thanks to the team at R&R Sport. The Trek Superfly FS 29er   was awesome on the terrain of this event and smoothed out many of the bumps nicely. I'll have to head back next year to do the whole loop of the lake!

All done!!

Tuesday

Naseby 12hour MTB Enduro - Solo 2014

Well a tough day out on the trails at Naseby in the R&R Sport Naseby 12hour MTB Race. This year the course was very wet and muddy making it very taxing in the initial hours of the race. I worked away ticking off lap by lap and managing a few 'low on go' periods and ended up completing 11 laps = 129km which was a little down on KM from last year, but the whole course and lap times of everyone were reported to be the slowest in the 10 year history of the event. A great event put on my the team at MOuntain Biking Otago and the New Trek Superfly FS8 was fantastic on the trails and having the dual suspension made things just that bit more comfortable. Thanks to the Team at R&R Sport as always for great gear and support.

Sunday

Lake Wanaka Half - Swim 1.9km, Cycle 90km, Run 21.1km

Ticked off another finish in the lake Wanaka half IM yesterday, a little down on what I had hoped, my ingestion of too much air through not having the best swim breathing technique in the world in the swim had some funky internal effects that slowed things down substantially on the bike and run, clicked in at 6hr30 all up a great blast in one of the best corners of the world, a great event to be a part of once again! A step down form the full IM last year but time for training wiht 3 children under 5 makes it a bit tough, perhaps the full Challenge come 2015 again! All made that bit more comfy with quality gear from the team at R&R Sport

Jan 17th 2014 - Lake Wanaka Half Tomorrow - the pre swim

Possibly the best swimming pool ever to train in!! Post swim this morning in the fantastic Lake Wanaka in final prep for tomorrows race in the Lake Wanaka Half. Challenge Wanaka All will be made that bit more comfortable with quality gear from R&R Sport -Cheers

Foot Injury ... Jandals and a Wet path December 24th 2013

Not the best footwear to have to wear for the next 2 weeks in main training build up for the Lake Wanaka Half in less than a month.... X-Rays shows no break, just lots of ligament and tissue damage. I reckon the road cycling shoe will give just as much support and rigidness as this silly shoe - so I'll be biking like a demon, and running like a person with a dodgy foot! Wet paths and slippery Jandals oops!

Eldorado MTB Race November 17th 2013

El Dorado 2013 - The Legend Begins. A fantastic 45 kmmMTB race today out on El Dorado Station - first time this event has been run and the organisers and volunteers did a great job, lots of good (brutally tough) grunty climbing for pretty much the first 90 min to push the heart rate off the scale and put the body into the hurt box!, the reward of this was the super fast down hill descents at full speed on the return leg!! Placed 22nd. All held together and made more comfortable with quality gear from R&R Sport, cheers team!

Dunedin Marathon 8th September 2013 - Marathon number 9 (10 if you count IM)

Great run this morning in the Dunedin Marathon in a smidge over 4hours, Marathon Number 9 (10 if you count Marathon at end of IM) Feeling pretty good - They aren't getting any faster, in fact today was my slowest, training priorities sit below quality family time with Cherie Sloan Oscar and Charlie. Our two little characters that don't give us complete sleeps may factor into a small amount of fatigue also! Anyway a great little corner of the world we live in running in around the bays from Tairoa Heads is stunning. All made a little more comfortable with quality gear from R&R Sport, the Icebreaker socks keep the feet in perfect condition the whole way!

Dunedin Mazda Adventure Challenge - 6hr 31st August 2013

A great blast out in the hills. This race was on parts of the terrain covered by us in the 12hour previously held in the area. Although this was familiar terrain it didn't make any of the terrain - especially the hills any easier! We were on the MTB for the first 3 hours before getting onto a run for the remaining part of the course with a zip line in the middle of the run course. All up a great location and great event put on by Josh Harris and Dunedin City Mazda. We finished up 5th and completed the course in 4hours and 55min.

Tuesday

Winter Night Riding - July 2013

The winter months this year have been pretty busy with young family and work, however in an effort to keep things ticking along I have kept up the running as well as having some fun night ride missions on the MTB. After investing in a new night light it has made the riding a whole lot brighter!! I picked up the "Glo Worm X2" and it is one awesome light!!! Coming up is the Dunedin Mazda 6hour Adventure Challenge and the following weekend the Dunedin Marathon... more on that here soon. And back into a summer of events and adventure!

Naseby 12hour MTB April

There has been a little void in updating some o my recent missions... The Naseby 12 hour in April was a good day out. Having raced in this previously in teams I thought it was time to put myself out there and ride Solo!! I set myself some goals to keep me focused and motivated by positive thought. I completed 165km in hte 12 hours and had a great day. The most challenging would have been lap 14 when I ran out of battery and rode the last 10min of the lap pretty much bumping along in the complete dark. Lap 15 was saved when Gavin lent me his light he wasn't needing. All in all a great day and a bit of a sore lower back and legs for a few days after this one!

Thursday

R&R Sport Motatapu Multisport Race 9th March 2013

Matukutuki Paddle - I'm the 3rd Boat in the line up there!

It is always great heading up to Wanaka for a weekend - the weather always seems to turn it on when ever we head up and this weekend just been was no exception to this. We loaded up and headed off to Wanaka on Friday lunchtime. The Motatapu Multipsort race is a new one for me. Last year I raced in the Xterra Tri which was the Swim/MTB/Run option, this year new for people to enter after being trialled last year was the Multisport Race option which consisted of a 15km Kayak stage down the clear braided waters of the Matukituki River and then onto the MTB for a 55km MTB through the Motatapu Station and onto Arrowtown for the final run stage made up of a 15km run up around the "Miners Trail" - this run was still pretty clear in my mind form last year as it had a massive hill climb that went on and on, the run course reaches a high point some 640 metres above the race start before a steep descent back down to the finish in Arrowtown.
MTB River Crossing
How it all went for me - The paddle was fantastic I really enjoy getting out in the Kayak and this paddle down the river was a great way to get going for this race - the river level was quite low so it was a bit of a slog at times but my trusty UFO slid through the water nicely - I came off the water 10th and felt good, the paddle time was around 1hr15min maybe (no watch on the wrist) onto the MTB it was straight into a wee pinch up and over a hill to join the Motatapu MTB track that would later have hundreds of MTB racers coming through, It was good to be on the trail before all of these bikers! After quite a few relentless little pinches up and down it I came to the 16km to go mark and from here the course is pretty much all down hill with some super quick descents and river crossings. From this part of the course you catch up with many of the Marathon runners. It is always a little nerve wrecking coming blasting down hill at full speed passing by runners on the left of the trail trusting fully that they are not going to cross over to the right of the track which wouldn't be pretty to connect with them at full speed! As always quality gear from R&R Sport had me biking through here comfoartably with the Giant XTC 29er rolling fast all the way - perhaps the only limitation being my leg muscles tiring!
Miners trail Run Descent
Off the MTB and onto the run, we there was a bit of walking as it is straight into the climb - all uphill for a long time - up and up in the heat I went until reaching the top, super views and then into the descent down over the slippery tussock grass before joining back onto the trail and river crossings to the finish in Arrowtown. I finished in 6hrs 59min and finished up 10th Open Man and 21st overall. Once I had cooled down and recovered a little it was time to catch up with Cherie, Oscar and Charlie, a steak Sammy form the BBQ tent, a trip to the Arrowtown Bakery for a well earned Pie and that was that! A great race and well oganised event. Thanks to Mat Woods for being my support person with the kayak drop off and Pick Up logistics at the start and to R&R Sport for the continued sponsorship and support.

Tuesday

Rail Trail Duathlon 23-24 Feb 2013

Well a solid weekend of sunshine, dust and heat on the rail trail over the weekend. This was the 4th time I have raced in this event and I was hoping to hold my 3rd Place from previous years or better it... this didn't happen this year a strong front end of the field had me working hard all the way. The duathlon run over 2 days consisted of 150km of biking and running. I had some solid bike stages and the run stages were quick but these dealt to me a little more than the bike stages! I finished up 6th individual open man in a combined time over the 2 days of 7hrs and 32min. All in all a great event, next up for me is the Motatapu Multisport race on the 9th of march followed a few weeks later by the Naseby 12hr enduro MTB as a solo rider!

Friday

Challenge Wanaka 2013

Well my Start into Challenge Wanaka involved completing a challenge to get the entry to line up for the challenge. Making a super large sign saying “Pick Me for Challenge Wanaka” and heading out to Doctors point with a mate to abseil off a 75m cliff and holding this above my head for an action photo! Anyway with no other competition for this challenge my challenging pic had me score the entry thanks to Lake Wanaka Tourism who put the entry and this challenge on!

Anyway the build-up in training for an iron distance triathlon involves some hard work and quality sessions in order to have the body trained and ready,  as well as to minimise the pain and suffering on race day if you are poorly prepared. The training for Challenge Wanaka proved to be a challenge of time management for me, having a full time job and a young family with Oscar 3 years old and Charlie 1 year old you have to maintain balance and make sure you don’t become centred around training and totally absorbed in the event preparation. So for me to be a good Dad and Husband as well as pull off work well I had most of my training complete very early in the day. With 5am starts done at the pool and long cycle and run training underway at similar times allowing me to fit in a good 5hour ride for example and be back home mid-morning and still have quality family time for the rest of the day. With the exceptions of shorter run sessions and open water swims during more normal hours of the day.

Anyway with all of my training and preparation complete Cherie, Oscar, Charlie and myself headed off to Wanaka on Thursday prior to the race and started to enjoy the weather and surrounds that Wanaka has to offer. Friday was registration and briefing and this is when you start to feel nervously excited about the event with the bustle of many athletes in town for the same purpose.
Anyway the night before there was quite strong winds blowing and we had Oscar our little 3 year old not so happy about the winds and had me up to him 2 times in the night, broken sleep is something I have become very used to over the last 3 years since having little ones!
Saturday morning arrived and I was up early in order to get some breakfast into the tummy before heading down to the lake for the start of my first crack at the Challenge Wanaka full iron distance race.

6.40am and we were away 10minutes behind the pro field into the water for the 3.8km swim. There was a small chop on the water from the wind. It was important to get stroke and breath timing right to eliminate any big mouthfuls of water. I had put some good work into my swimming and enjoyed the swim course, the biggest challenge of this was seeing where to go on parts of the swim loop as the sun made a glare across the water. After 1hour and 30min I exited the water and felt good about having one of the 3 disciplines for the day ticked off.

Into the transition change tent, cycle kit and sunblock on and I was onto the bike for the 180km cycle stage. The cycle was the part of this event that I had anticipated to be the one that could make or break me. 180km is a long way to ride before having to run a marathon! The bike ride proved to be challenging with lots of undulation and small hills/rises along with a few parts of the 2 lap course having head winds just to suck a little more sting from the legs. Anyway when you break the ride up, firstly into 2 laps of 90km and then take into account that every 25km there is an aid station the ride becomes very manageable mentally. The ride pretty much involved just spinning away and grinding into the head winds when present while ensuring I was taking on plenty of food and drink at each aid station – I ate enough Bananas and Bars on the bike to kill any craving for these for a while to come! The cycle stage took me 7hrs and 5min which I was happy with and I felt I managed my energy and fluid consumption well as I came off the cycle stage not feeling destroyed at all.

Onto the run… 42.2km - business time, there is a common saying with triathlon that you “Swim and Bike for show and run for dough!” I wasn’t going to be running for any monetary dough with my speed or lack of rather the only dough I’d be running for is that of the bread dough of the Subway Sandwiches in the finish tent!

The effects of having exercised for just under 9 hours before taking on a marathon distance run starts to shine once you get going into the run. All along I had known that the run would be very slow and hopefully not too painful. I headed out of town and ran the first 2km looking good ( you have to run this bit looking good as there are so many people watching you don’t want to look soft in front of too many people!) Once I settled into the run it became apparent that the heat and wind were/had sapped me of energy a little and the run became a mission to consume enough fluid and food as the tummy would allow to get me through this run. A fair bit of running and walking was on the cards, I think this was common for many, anyway near the end of the first lap of the run I came across Cherie and the boys there cheering me along, form here it was down the main street before taking on the second lap of the run.

Onto the second lap and I started to feel a little better than on the first as the temperature had dropped a little. My muscles were feeling fine and at no stage did I encounter any cramps it was more the lack of ‘spark’ due to a bit of fatigue I guess. Anyway coming up to the 40km marker on the run I thought I would use all the reserves that I had to blast out the last 2 km of the run  - surprising myself I managed to run 4min30sec kms for the last 2km – a whole lot faster than any other part of the run. Coming down the main street to the finishing area is a real buzz with all the supporters and the sense of achievement that floods through your body as you cross the finish line an realise that you have just completed and iron distance triathlon all under your own steam!!14hours and 30minutes was my finish time and one I am very happy with.

From the finish line it was into the finish tent and the first thing the race officials do is have you jump on the scales. I weighed in prior to the race at 84kg and in the finish tent clocked in at 78kg – so 6kg of weight loss equates to a lot of fluids. In the finish tent it was time to rehydrate and eat in order to start the body’s recovery of energy used throughout the day. From here it was onto the massage table to have a few tight muscles relieved with a good 20min massage. From here home to a refreshing shower and then bed.

Waking up on Sunday other than the obvious fatigue from a big day out on Saturday I felt pretty good, surprisingly good which has me reflecting on parts of the race that in a future attempt I could push a little harder on and make improvements to other things such as nutrition to slice some more time off another crack.. I know form having been involved in triathlon and multisport endurance events for many years that they become very addictive and there are many intrinsic factors motivating future challenges.

So after the event it was a great week relaxing in Wanaka for the best bit of a week, a great little place in the world to chill out and spend time in.

Massive thanks must got to R&R Sport for sponsoring me in my adventures with quality gear and support along with Lake Wanaka Tourism who put the challenge out there and sorted the entry into this event.

Dunedin City Mazda 12 hour Adventure Challenge!

What a great day out - Saturday 3rd November. A super event put on by Josh Harris and his team of helpers. More of a blurb/report and some photos here very soon...

Tuesday

Challenge Wanaka - 87 Days to Go!!!

Well with Challenge Wanaka getting closer at around 87 days to go, I am starting to get some feelings of excitement along with a few nerves as well, the thought of the 3.8km swim, 180km cycle and 42,2km run is definitely going to put on a challenge!

I have a good base of fitness and experience from many endurance, multisport, triathlon and adventure based races over the years so this puts me in a good position knowing how my body responds and copes with challenges like the full course Challenge Wanaka. I have sorted myself out a good schedule of training to build up and be ready to go for the Challenge on January 19th – The toughest challenges so far of lately have been getting out of bad super early to transform my swimming style from sluggish to slick, I work as a teacher and have a couple of students in my class who are up and at the pool at 5am 6 days a week – I am not sure how they manage this so well – I find it tough 3-4 mornings a week ( A young family of a 3 year old and a 9 month old sons may affect this sleep monster and have some impacts on training, but of anything make me tougher!)

Anyway things are going good so far in training and prep for Challenge Wanaka. I raced in a local running event the other weekend “Kellys Canter” a blast to the monument at the top of a hill and return – more of a lug and leg burner but a good we blast – retaining my trophy of 1st  in the ‘Local category’ for the 3rd year and 6th overall. A few weeks earlier in September I ran in the Dunedin Marathon clocking in at just over 3 and a half hours so my running is feeling good. All this mixed  into some good training over the recent weeks including some good cycling should see me on track fine, one focus over the next 2 months is to get really strong on the bike!

Coming up on the 3rd of November I will race in the Dunedin City Mazda 12 Hour Adventure Challenge ( www.adventurechallenge.co.nz ), this will be a good day out with 12 hours of MTBing, running and Kayaking to give the body a good blast of racing over a similar timeframe to what I expect to be on my feet for in the Challenge Wanaka Race.

Anyway once again many thanks must go to lake Wanaka Tourism
www.lakewanaka.co.nz for the entry into the Challenge Wanaka for 2013! More updates again soon!
